The sunny town of Gilbert is one of the fastest growing incorporated towns in the country. Gilbert is located in Maricopa County, Arizona, about 30 minutes southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The average July high in this desert city is 104 degrees, with mild January lows at 36 degrees Fahrenheit. This town used to be known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World”.
Gilbert’s history begins in 1902 when the Arizona Eastern Railway established a rail line between Phoenix and Florence. A rail siding was built on William “Bobby” Gilbert’s property. A town came to life around the siding and became known as Gilbert. Gilbert, a farming community, was sustained by the development of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals. Until the 1920s, Gilbert remained an agriculture community. The town earned its title as “Hay Shipping Capital of the World” during that time. During the 1970s, the Town Council approved a strip annexation of 53 square miles of land. Since then, the town has flourished into the thriving community it is today.
