The origin of San Tan Valley’s name is debated between the San Tan Mountains, a corruption of the name Santa Ana, the last name of a former postmaster, George San Tan, and more. The area acquired a new zip code, so the United States Postal Service petitioned to provide it with a name of its own on January 1st, 2009. A non-binding vote took place on June 23rd, 2009 giving it the name San Tan Valley.
